What is a 'just right' book?

*if you know most of the words
(less than 5 unknown words on a page).

* if you can understand what you are reading.

* if you are able to tell about the book.

* if it is not too hard and not too easy.
* if it just feels good!

What is a 'quick read 'book?
* if you know all the words.
*  if you can tell about the book.
*  if you know it by heart because
you have read it so many times.
* if it is an ‘old favorite.’
* if you can read the pages
   without looking.

Why do we level books?

It is critical to match our readers to books at their Just Right level, or independent level.  Research has shown that children will only become better readers if they are reading books that they can read on their own with 96% accuracy or better, good fluency and good comprehension.

What do the levels mean?

Below you will also find charts that detail each reading level along with the text characteristics of that level and the reader characteristics needed to be successful at that level.
