Prerequisites: credit in Algebra I       

                

Textbook: Geometry by Larson, Boswell, Kanold & Stiff; McDougall-Littell (2008)

 

Course Objectives (based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics):

 

  • Experiment with transformations in the plane
  • Understand congruence in terms of rigid motions
  • Prove geometric theorems
  • Make geometric constructions
  • Understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations
  • Prove theorems involving similarity
  • Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles
  • Understand and apply theorems about circles
  • Find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles
  • Translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section
  • Use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically
  • Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems
  • Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations

 

Course content & structure (based on Connecticut Department of Education recommendations):

 

  • Transformations and the Coordinate Plane– September – October (5 weeks)
  • Congruence, Proof & Constructions – October - November (5 weeks)
  • Polygons – Triangles & Parallelograms – November - December (5 weeks)
  • Similarity, Proof & Trigonometry– January - February (5 weeks)
  • Circles & Other Conic Sections– February - March (5 weeks)
  • Extend to Three Dimensions – April - May (5 weeks)
  • Applications of Probability – May – June (5 weeks)
