Honors Geometry

Course Objectives - (Based on Common Core State Standards):

Students will be able to:

  • Experiment with transformations in the plane
  • Understand congruence in terms of rigid motions
  • Prove geometric theorems
  • Make geometric constructions
  • Understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations
  • Prove theorems involving similarity
  • Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles
  • Understand and apply theorems about circles
  • Find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles
  • Translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section
  • Use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically
  • Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems
  • Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations

Scope and Sequence (Based on CT Department of Education Recommendations):

  • Unit 1 - Transformations and the Coordinate Plane – September – October (5 weeks)
  • Unit 2 - Triangle Congruence & Proofs – October - November (5 weeks)
  • Unit 3 - Triangle Properties & Compass Constructions – November (4 weeks)
  • Unit 4 - Trigonometry – December (3 weeks)
  • Unit 5 - Similarity - January (2 weeks)
  • Unit 6 - Properties of Circles & Other Conic Sections – January - February - (3 weeks)
  • Unit 7 - Extend to Three Dimensions (Surface Area & Volume of Solids) – February - March (5 weeks)
  • Unit 8 - Applications of Probability – April – May (5 weeks)
  • Unit 9 - Algebra Skills Review (Algebra 2 Prerequisite Skills) - May - June (4 weeks)
