Dear Parents,
Can you believe that it is January of 2020 already? We have a lot going on here at school! In math, we are finishing up our second unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping. This unit reviews and extends students’ thinking about place value, multi-digit addition and subtraction, and problem solving. Our next unit will focus on measurement, time, and fractions. Students tell time to the minute and solve elapsed time problems. A short project at the end of the unit brings it all together, as students measure lengths to fractions of an inch and display measurement data on line plots.
In writing, we are continuing to write non-fiction focusing on understanding different non-fiction text structures and understanding how and why authors use them to convey information.
In reading, we are currently finishing up a unit on reading non-fiction and will be moving on to a unit about social issues. I will be teaching students to pay close attention to all aspects of characters thoughts and actions in response to a social issue to predict and understand how that drives the story.
In Science we are finishing up our unit on force and motion. and in both science and social studies, we will also continue using our Scholastic Science Spin and Scholastic News magazines to guide our learning in the areas of current events and map skills. (Along with some great non-fiction reading skills.)

Mondays January 6th & 13th – 1:55 PLC release days
Wednesday, January 8th – Book orders are due by today (in-school and online). You can order through me by turning in the order form or online! One check can be written out for multiple orders to “Scholastic Reading Club.” For online orders, our class code is H3G3G.
Monday, January 20th – No School, Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Thursday, January 23rd – Field trip to the Peabody Museum. Permission forms and $8 due by January 10th.
Monday, January 27th – 12:45 Early Release for Professional Development
Monday, February 3rd, 10th, & 24th – 1:55 PLC release days
Monday, February 17th – No School – President’s Day
Tuesday, February 18th – No School - Vacation Day
