Mr. Croyle

Why do we need to level our books?

It is critical to match our readers to books at their Just Right level, or independent level.  Research has shown that children will only become better readers if they are reading books that they can read on their own with 96% accuracy or better, good fluency and good comprehension.

How do we level our books?

Below you will find a link to a Scholastic website that contains thousands of book titles and their guided reading level.

                        What do the levels mean?

Below you will also find a chart that details each reading level along with the text characteristics of that level and the reader characteristics needed to be successful at that level.

So How do I choose a book for my child?

A book is a Quick Read

  • if you know all the words.
  • if you can tell about the book.
  • if you know it by heart because you have read it so many times.
  • if it is an 'old favorite.'
  • if you can read the pages without looking.
  • It is still important to have 'Oldie but goodies!'

A book is Just Right

  • if you know most of the words.Wink
  • if you can understand what you are reading.
  • if you are able to tell about the book.
  • if it is not too hard and not too easy.
  • if it just FEELS goodCool!
