Windsor Locks High School Artists
Display Their Talents
Windsor Locks, CT August 5, 2015: These talented artist displayed their amazing work at SpringHill Suites Marriott on August 5, 2015. Megan McGloin is a senior at Windsor Locks High School, Class President and Varsity Athlete for Soccer, Basketball and Tennis. She hopes to pursue a career in Sports Management. Megan Hoyt is a senior at Windsor Locks High School. She is on the Soccer and Track & Field teams. She hopes to pursue a career in Art Education. Joe Schmid has graduated from Windsor Locks High and will be attending the University Of Hartford this fall. He will be majoring in Illustration. Joanna Abare is a sophomore at Windsor Locks High School. She enjoys all forms of art and hopes to pursue a career in art. Shelby Matheus has graduated from Windsor Locks High and will be attending Springfield College this fall. She will be majoring in Art Therapy. Jerry Godefory is a senior at Windsor Locks High School and hopes to pursue an art career. The State of Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and the State Department of Education co-sponsored the 2015 CT Kids’ Court Essay Competition and Kids Speak. The Kids’ Court Competition provides Jr. High and High School students with an opportunity to research a specific civil or human rights issue and advocate a position, initially in an essay and then, if selected, orally before a panel of judges.
Kids Speak , which is the kickoff to the Kids’ Court Essay Competition, is a half-day program at UConn law school consisting of interactive exercises, peer debate, improvisations, interactive panel discussion and peer dialogue aimed at raising student’s consciousness about civil and human rights issues and reducing bullying and prejudice.
Barbara S. Niziolek supervised 15 Windsor Locks high school through the process of the groundbreaking event. Students Desmond Egyin, Alvin Kahoxayo, and Kaya Walker placed in the semifinals and presented their essays on the topics of individuals with disabilities, impact of music on how women are viewed, and how social media impacts society before a panel of 8 judges. Kaya placed 2nd, Desmond placed 3rd, and Alvin was a runner up. The students represented their families and Windsor Locks with pride and did an outstanding job. The group plans on attending again next year to continue their important work of learning about and making social changes in their community and beyond. Barbara S. Niziolek

Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Windsor Locks, CT June 5, 2015:
Nicholas Worley named Valedictorian for the class of 2015.
Looking back: High honors all four years, Harvard Book Award, Rensselaer Medalist, National Merit Scholar, Underclassman History Award, Underclassman Chemistry Award, Underclassman Spanish Award, CAPT Scholar Award, Scholar Athlete Award and Most Improved Award, Voice of Democracy winner, Boys State representative, Varsity Tennis, Tennis Captain and All-Conference player, soccer, Math Team, Robotics Drive Team, Board of Education representative, Class Treasurer, National Honors Society Public Relations. Community service through school tutoring and caretaking for neighboring senior citizens.
Looking Ahead: Plans on attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York for Aerospace engineering with a dual major in mechanical engineering.
Linda Ye named Salutatorian for the class of 2015.
Looking Back: High Honor Roll all four years, Third Place in Voice of Democracy, National Student Leadership Conference on Healthcare and Medicine, Yale Book Award, Academic Achievement in Science freshman and sophomore year, National Honors Society, Scholar Athlete, Music Award for Band sophomore and junior year, clarinetist for concert and marching band, alto saxophonist for jazz band, second clarinet for NCCC band junior year, first clarinet for NCCC band for senior year, math team, Girl’s Tennis doubles player.

I attended the 2nd Thursday of the month Rotary Club Meeting/Breakfast at Windsor 75 Diner Restaurant. After being postponed from April, WLHS Junior Peter Graywacz (looking dapper in his teal shirt and matching bow-tie) was recognized this morning as the Rotary Club WLHS "May Student of the Month." (The Windsor/Windsor Locks/East Granby Rotary Club also recognized one student from East Granby High School as its Rotary Club "Student of the Month.") Multiple WLHS teachers nominated Peter. Originally, Shannon Verissimo had planned to speak on Peter's behalf but she was on a Field Trip today. I spoke about Peter, highlighting his academic achievement, work ethic, love of learning, his involvement with the audio engineering for school events, and being a quality young man and positive role model here at WLHS. In his gracious acceptance speech, Peter emphasized his passion for learning, especially Mathematics and Science, and his desire to become a teacher. Peter praised Mrs. Verissimo and all of his WLHS teachers; he also shared his great appreciation for his positive educational experience here at Windsor Locks High School. His proud parents attended.
