Reader's Workshop

The readers in Room 5 "shop" for their own just-right books from leveled bins in our classroom library. We use the Guided Reading system of book leveling at South School.

.

Each day we have a brief minilesson where a reading strategy is modeled by the teacher and practiced by the students.

Readers then move to their reading spots and apply the strategy in their just right books.  We are working to build our stamina to 30 minutes of quality reading time each day!  Ask your child how long he or she read today.

Readers quickly jot down their predictions, connections, questions, thoughts, and ideas on post-its and in their reader's notebooks as they read.

Readers have a chance to meet with their partners and share the work they did during independent reading.  We have great conversations about books!

Readers are expected to keep track of their reading in a log.  Each day and night, students should be recording the date, title, author, level, page numbers, and total number of minutes read.  Ask your child to share his or her reading log with you!  Students enjoy looking back and reflecting on their growth as readers!
