A word about homework...

It is my belief that homework should be directly related to each student's progress and growth goals if it is to be meaningful and useful for students.

In order to grow as a reader, it is important to read consistently on a daily basis. As such, all students will be responsible for reading for at least 30 minutes on Monday through Thursday, and one day on the weekend, for a total of 5 at-home reading days. This reading will be logged so students can use this information to set reading goals for themselves.

In fourth grade math, we will learn to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers. Students who know their basic multiplication facts tend to have a much easier time with this work. Each day, students should practice their basic multiplication facts, through the 12s, until they are able to solve them automatically. In addition to the more traditional methods, like flash cards, there are also some fun math games available online. To get started, feel free to check out some of the activities and games at Math Playground, https://www.mathplayground.com/games.html.

Once the year gets rolling, we will have weekly math homework that will be assigned on Monday and will be due the following Monday. It will include a variety of math skills, so students can select the work that best matches their personal goals.

This homework process will allow the students to select work that will be most useful for their growth as a learner. It will also encourage them to reflect on their progress, plan their time effectively, and become more self-directed learners as the year progresses.
