I have complied a list of skills your child will learn in reading and word work this year. I am sure you will find it useful in helping your child decode unfamiliar words.
1. Short vowel words- usually these words have only one vowel (cvc pattern)
ex. bat nest top sit cup
2. Long vowel words- usually end with a silent 'e' (cvce pattern) or have two vowels together:
Rule- The first one does the talking, the second one does the walking
ex. take rain boat mule road
3. 'Y' makes the long i or e sounds when it comes at the end of words
ex. sky try fancy happy
4. The letter 'c' makes the 's' sound (soft sound) when followed by an 'i' or 'e' ( bossy 'e' or 'i').
ex. dance mice circus cent
5. 'oo' makes two sounds as in the words boot and room; and book and foot
What is a digraph???
6. Digraphs; sh--shoe, ch--cheek, th--think, wh--wheel, ph-- phone, qu--queen
7. Endings:
er- helper ed - helped ing- helping s-helps
To make a word plural, add 's' or 'es'
ex. chairs girls boys wishes
8. When sounding out words, look for small words in the bigger words.
ex. thin catch always
Thank you for working with your child at home.
I always tell my students, "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!"
