Who We Are

We are a local chapter of the National Organization of the Scholarship America organization, made up of volunteer community members and high school personnel whose mission is to encourage Windsor Locks students to further their education.  We support this mission through scholarship awards and financial assistance, and by promoting activities within the WL community that help students achieve their educational goals.

In October of 2001, a group of volunteers from our community founded a local chapter of the national organization, Dollars for Scholars.  An element that is common to all local Dollars for Scholars chapters is a commitment to community-based fundraising for scholarships to be awarded to local students.  For the fourth consecutive year, the Windsor Locks chapter of Dollars for Scholars will hold an auction for this purpose.

One of the benefits of affiliation with the national organization  is access to the Dollars for Scholars Collegiate Partners, a program of more than 500 colleges, universities and post-secondary schools across the United States that agree not to reduce their grant aid to students who have been awarded Dollars for Scholars scholarships.  More than 125 colleges will also match the Dollars for Scholars awards, providing additional funding for scholarship recipients.

Since the Foundation has the benefit of 501(c)(3) status, your contribution to Dollars for Scholars is tax deductible.

What We Do
  • Work with the WLHS guidance department to administer approximately 90% of the scholarships given through the Windsor Locks Public Schools.  More than $100,000 was awarded to Windsor Locks students at the 2009 awards ceremony.
  • Encourage groups, individuals, clubs and organizations to take advantage of Dollars for Scholars ($4S) affiliation.
  • Fundraise to award new/additional scholarships.  Our local chapter was proud to award the first Windsor Locks Dollars for Scholars Scholarship to a local 2004 graduating senior and to award the first Windsor Locks Public Schools AlumniScholarship to a graduate of the Class of 2005.  During the Scholarship ceremony in June of 2007, we awarded our firstWindsor Locks Dollars for Scholars Judy McDonald Memorial Scholarship and, in 2008, the first Windsor Locks Dollars for Scholars Community Scholarships funded by the auction proceeds.  The Windsor Locks Dollars for Scholars Community Service Scholarship was instituted in 2009 to honor the volunteer commitment of former Board of Education Chair, John Dowd, who was our first President.
  • Oversee the investment of scholarship funds entrusted to us by local citizens.
  • Solicit new scholarships for our students from local businesses, citizens and clubs.
