Parent Tips
Before Reading
Read the title and look at the cover together.
Talk about what the story could be about.
Flip through the pages and discuss what might happen.
While Reading
If your child comes to a difficult word: Look at the picture. What word would make sense? Look at the beginning letter of the word. What word would make sense that begins with that sound? Try reading that whole sentence again. See if you can think of a word that makes sense.
What’s most important to be thinking about while reading?
What do the characters want? What are they doing to get what they want? What is getting in their way to get what they want?
What was the author’s message? What did the author want us to learn? How did the author help us (illustrations, descriptive words, different types of writing inserted, diagrams, headings, chapter titles, subtitles etc.)
After Reading
Talk about the story:
Were there surprises? What did you think about the characters or the ending? Did the story remind you of any other story or things that have happened to you? Did you learn something new? Ask your child to retell the story in his/her own words.
